The 17 October election is around the corner! It is important to inform ourselves on the critical topics at stake in this election.

Summer Bulletin No. 2 - August 2026
The upcoming local election on 17 October 2026 is now around the corner!
Ahead of the election, our QB Good Neighbours group is preparing to engage Candidates on what we see as crucial community issues:
1. Pursuing density for the sake of density - How can we better manage Bill 44 pressures on Qualicum Beach to achieve well-planned development that factors in critical infrastructure needs?
2. Treating the Official Community Plan (OCP) as anything but 'official' - How can we ensure that our community-directed guiding vision for the Town is respected? The OCP is supposed to be our "North Star". When development proposals do not meet the OCP, they should be rejected.
3. Challenging the effectiveness of the Advisory Planning Commission (APC) - Council often defers to the APC's view on development projects. We believe it is critically important that APC members have sufficient subject matter expertise in order to give advice to Council on important growth and development decisions for our Town.
4. Deteriorating transparency from the Town on the things that matter - We note from the 2025 Annual Report that the number of 'in camera' or 'closed' Council meetings has been increasing, from 17 in 2022 to 31 in 2025. The number of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests has also increased from approximately 80 in 2022/23 to 115 in 2024. This is not a sign of a healthy democratic environment.
5. Lack of "real" two-way communication between Council and the public - we know there are many residents out there who are NOT happy with the direction of decision-making. Many have written letters to Councillors and the Town. Many letters go unanswered. Many FOI requests seem to be stalled. How can the Town devise a more effective two-way communication channel between Councillors and the tax-paying public -- a channel that is not just for 'appearance' but where the public will feel truly 'heard'?
6. Shortage of services desperately needed by majority of Town residents - Aside from the obvious need for more medical / elderly care services, the Town needs to invest in policing, bylaw enforcement, economic development to support retail services, and amenities to support our elderly population. Let alone investing in basic infrastructure (see Point 1 above).
